چکیده

In this paper, we address the issue of motion estimation in real video sequences. While the conventional block-matching criteria for motion estimation is based on the assumption that the average values of the target block and reference blocks are identical. This causes performance degradation for motion estimation because average values are time-varying in real video sequences. In order to alleviate this problem, we propose a new statistically adaptive block-matching criterion (SABMC). In SABMC, the motion vector is estimated by considering time-varying average and shape that represents the fluctuation of pixel values separately, because they are of different importance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SABMC criterion provides higher PSNR values than conventional block-matching criteria at various bit rates.

Adaptive search area for fast motion estimation

In this paper a new method for determining the search area for motion estimation algorithm based on block matching is suggested. In the proposed method the search area is adaptively found for each block of a frame. This search area is similar to that of the full search (FS) algorithm but smaller for most blocks of a frame. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is analogous to FS in terms of reg...

New adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation

Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...

Adaptive Pixel Difference Classification, an Efficient and Cost Effective Algorithm for Motion Estimation

In this paper we present a simple adaptive block-matching algorithm for video compression. Our method is an adaptive approach to pixel difference classification (PDC) matching criterion. A constant threshold is used in original PDC algorithm in which optimum threshold varies from sequence to sequence. In contrast to the original PDC algorithm, adaptive PDC (APDC) employs a time variant threshol...

An Improved Motion Vector Estimation Approach for Video Error Concealment Based on the Video Scene Analysis

In order to enhance the accuracy of the motion vector (MV) estimation and also reduce the error propagation issue during the estimation, in this paper, a new adaptive error concealment (EC) approach is proposed based on the information extracted from the video scene. In this regard, the motion information of the video scene around the degraded MB is first analyzed to estimate the motion type of...

Video coding based on true motion estimation

In this paper, a new approach for MC-DCT (motion compensated – Discrete Cosine Transform) hybrid video coding based on true motion estimation is proposed. The true motion estimation technique employs the leastmedian-squares (LMedS) matching criterion in block matching process for motion estimation. The rationale for using such true motion estimator is that at low bit-rates, very few bits are av...
